Energy Efficiency Rebates

On July 1, 2009, the Hawaii Public Utilities Commission is transferring responsibility for the energy efficiency programs formerly run by the Hawaiian Electric companies to the Hawaii Energy Efficiency Program Administrator.

All of us at the Hawaiian Electric companies thank our customers and participating contractors for helping make our energy efficiency programs so successful for 13 years (1996-2009).

Maui Electric will continue to operate the Solar Saver Pilot, Maui Solar Roofs Initiative and Solar for Molokai programs

As the new Public Benefits Administrator, the Hawaii Energy Efficiency Program Administrator will run the following programs:

For Homes

Rebates for:
    • Compact Fluorescent Lights (CFLs) Specialty bulb coupons
    • Solar Water Heating rebates
    • High-efficiency electric water heater rebates

For Businesses

Rebates for qualified energy-efficient technologies:
    • Retrofits
    • New Construction
    • Customized Rebates

Energy efficiency is essential to reducing Hawaii’s dependence on imported oil and cutting greenhouse gas emissions.

Maui Electric and the Hawaii Energy Efficiency Program Administrator are working for a smooth transition of the efficiency programs. Beginning July 1, the Hawaii Energy Efficiency Program Administrator is accepting and processing Hawaii Energy Efficiency Program and MECO rebate applications until its own forms are ready.

Over 13 years, working together, we have:
    • Installed more than 47,000 CFLs and more than 11,000 solar water heating systems;
    • Reduced electricity demand by nearly 20 megawatts;
    • Paid over $17 million in rebates and other incentives;
    • Avoided burning 201,000 barrels of oil a year;
    • Reduced emission of carbon dioxide by nearly 100,000 tons a year.
